MICKEY'S NEWS!!
Great Job Mickey!!!!
ABBY PUP
I took Mickey, my 10 month old English Setter to the trainer today for an Evaluation, to determine if he wanted to monkey with him or not. Mickey locked up on point the first bird he came too. Trainer flushed the bird, while holding Mickey's check cord. He said are you sure this dogs hasn't been on birds yet. I said I had him in the woods alot last fall, but no birds. Mickey disappeared over a little hill. I said should I call him back. He said no, he should check back in with us. No Mickey for about 3 minutes, we walk over this little hill, and Mickey's locked on point and holding his second bird. We walked over to Mickey, bird flushed before trainer could grab the check cord. Bang! Mickey jumped and had that Chucker in his mouth. Walked around us for a minute with bird in his mouth, trainer called him in, Mickey dropped the bird. Trainer broke the birds neck, through it about 20 yards, Mickey retrieved it right back to us. He says are you sure you haven't been doing any training with this dog. I said nope, just been letting him be a pup. We wondered around the field for another 10 minutes. Mickey locked up on point again. we stood there for about two minutes while he held point. Then the trainer walked in and flushed the bird, while holding Mickey's check cord. He turned to me and said, I can't wait to start working with this dog. I said no problem, with the biggest grin I've had on my face in a long time. Just had to share this moment with everyone. I was pretty proud of the dog. You got some fine dogs there Deb. Update-6-2-05 Deb, I picked Mickey up from the trainer this morning. Man is it nice to have him back. He killed 2 bobwhite over him this morning while I was there. Mickey pointed them real good and held point till we flushed the birds. He then retrieved them. If Mickey ranges to far left or right, one sharp whistle blow will turn him. When you want him to come in, you call him and blow a long whistle and he returns to your side. He is partially Whoa broke, but that will be my job to finish that. Trainer says he has a very strong natural instinct for pointing staunch, plus he's not scared to bust the thick brush, looking for birds. Thanks again for the great dog. Dave Miles
